BACIOCCO FAMILY CHRISTMAS PHOTO CONTEST

In order to tell you about the BACIOCCO FAMILY
CHRISTMAS PHOTO CONTEST, a family tradition three years old now, I must tell you
about another family tradition. Ben Frank’s Night.

In December of 1999, my mother had
decided she’d done enough cooking and we should all go out to dinner. We all
piled into the car and headed off to Redwood City (a few miles south of
Burlingame) and went to a restaurant called Ben Franks. Okay, maybe restaurant
is a bit of an exaggeration. Ben Franks is a little hot dog/corn dog stand.
There’s no indoor seating to speak of. So we ordered our food and all sat in my
Dad’s truck and proceeded to have the best time you could have as a family. The
jokes were flying, Mom and Dad wound up with tears in their eyes from laughing
so hard. Safe to say a good time was had by all. It was decided then and there
that this would become a yearly holiday
tradition.

We repeated the trip in 2000
as well with much the same results. A good time was had by
all.

Then, at Christmas 2000, something
happened that would elevate Ben Franks night even further. Christmas morning we
awoke to find that Santa left us a note after dropping off all our gifts. The
note announced the beginning of BACIOCCO FAMILY CHRISTMAS PHOTO CONTEST. He had
been watching us (of course, I mean that’s what Santa does) and was very
impressed with the amount of laughter that came from the truck on Ben Franks
night. He dcided he’d create a little tradition for us to add to the
fun.

He left us 4 disposable cameras
and the following rules:

– There was
one camera for each of us.

– The very
first photo on the camera must be a self portrait of yourself. The very last
photo must also be a self portrait of yourself. This is to identify which
package of pictures belongs to whom.

The entire role of film must be used by midnight on December 25 (technically the
26th, but ya’ll know what I mean).

After the rolls are turned in for developing, NO ONE may look at the photos. NO
ONE MAY SEE THE PHOTOS TILL BEN FRANKS NIGHT OF THE FOLLOWING
YEAR.

– On BEN FRANKS NIGHT the
following year, the photos are all judged by a very strict judging process.

JUDGING
PROCESS:

– Only direct member son the
Baciocco family may judge the photos. Anyone else coming along for Ben Franks
night may see the photos and may offer opinions, but they may not
vote.

Each person goes through their pictures and picks out three photos that fit into
the only category that is judged upon: WHICH PHOTO BEST EXEMPLIFIES THE
BACIOCCO FAMILY CHRISTMAS?

– Once
each family member has decided on their three photos, they put all the rest of
the photos away.

– The pictures are
passed COUNTER CLOCK WISE around the car. Each Baciocco family member looks at
the three photos and puts a star on the one from the group that they think fits
the criteria.

– Once the photos have
been judged by every family member, the top vote getter in each batch of three
photos is taken out and they are all put together in one
pile.

– The top vote getter pile is
then passed around and voted upon
again.

– The photo that gets the most
votes is declared the winner of that year’s BACIOCCO FAMILY CHRISTMAS PHOT
CONTEST.

SO far we’ve had two of
these contests. I will try and get scans of the previous years’ winners. They
are a riot.

Saturday is BEN FRANKS
NIGHT! Can’t wait!
