Missing Jamie Painting

Quilt made from Jamie's T-Shirts.

My favorite pic of Jamie. I took it up behind our house last fall in a place called Lakes Basin...we went up there for hikes and picnics and just to hang out.

It's hard to grasp how big the monument is. It's 10 feet tall, 6 feet wide, and 2 feet thick. But more than that, it is huge in the hearts of many Canadians, and locals from Pelee Island, and those of us who know and love Jamie. The etchings in the marble are like photographs. The detail is exquisite. The reality of seeing Jamie's face on this (right above Waynes' on the lower left) for all time is still overwhelming. The brown mulch in the foreground is a garden area that will be in full color in the spring and summer. One other act that displayed how the Canadian people sincerely demonstrate their respect to Jamie and her country ... they raised both the Canadian AND American flags. The colors of the United States of America will forever fly over this spot and be a permanent part of Pelee Island! This is a high tribute considering that there have been 5 American Presidents who have visitied Pelee Island in the past, and the Stars and Stripes were never a permanent fixture until Saturday's memorial. The flags are just out of view in the foreground.

While I am sure that Jamie would not have chosen this particular hunting theme, I know she would understand the culture of the people up in that part of the world, who believe that the tradition of hunting in the manner carried on generation after generation is both honorable, and bonds families and friends together forever. If you would someday travel to this area and meet the people of the communities, you would perhaps come away with the warmth and sincerity they freely exhibit. If you ever go to visit the memorial you will be met with open hearts and arms.

The Ontario Provincial Police officer, Lee, who is standing next to me, was with Dori, David and I the entire time we were in Canada last January. She does marine patrol on the international border in the Graet Lakes, and now works with underprivileged children in the City of Windsor. She and Jamie would have much in common. We were glad to reunite with her. The naval officer standing next to Lee is the First Mate of the Samuel Risley, the recovery vessel. He spent the entire 2 weeks aboard the ship in the brutal weather last January, and told me that when Captain Fowler read he and the crew my letter of appreciation last March, that there was not a dry eye among them. He thanked me profusely on behalf of the crew and Captain. Larry Woods, on the right, is the man who put the entire memorial project together with fund-raisers, pheasant hunts, and auctions. He raised over $30,000 - the surplus money is dedicated to purchasing emergency rescue equipment for deployment from Pelee Island. Larry was supposed to be on the plane, but he had a doctor appointment that caused him to miss the hunt last January. It was the first hunt he missed with his friends in over 25 years. If he would have gone as he usually would have, there would have been no room for Jamie on the plane.

So many people came up to us with tears in their eyes telling us how much they appreciated getting to know Jamie through our eyes. I am proud of Dori, because it was her purpose to do just that - travel across North America to introduce Jamie as only Dori could. She is very courageous, and many tearful expressions were expressed to us in the Pelee Island community hall after the dediction.
